I Spent the Night Inside a Historic Church Turned Pod Hotel: My BUNK Amsterdam Review

Share on:

Travelling on a budget doesn’t mean you have to give up comfort and privacy—in fact, my recent stay at BUNK Amsterdam proved you can have it all. Just a short ferry ride from the heart of the city, this one-of-a-kind accommodation combines affordability, modern design, and a hint of luxury, making it the perfect base for exploring everything Amsterdam has to offer.

The Pods: Roomy, Comfortable, and Practical

Bunk Amsterdam

The sleeping pods at BUNK are nothing short of exceptional and undoubtedly one of the highlights of the stay. With over 100 rooms and 52 pods (single and double), I opted for the double (two-person) pod, which was very spacious and thoughtfully designed. I was fortunate to score a bottom pod, complete with a plush mattress, a cozy duvet, handy hooks with hangers, and a conveniently placed charging outlet on the back wall (EU-style—don’t forget your universal adapter!).

The blackout curtains offered just the right amount of privacy, creating a personal sanctuary within the shared space. The locker found beneath the bed was a standout feature—generously sized to fit a large suitcase, carry-on, and backpack. Not to mention, secured with your keycard, meaning you don’t need to bring your own lock.

Every detail felt intentional, making it as functional as it was comfortable.

One of the coolest features? The ambient lighting in the pod can be adjusted to different colours to match your mood. It added a fun, personal touch to my stay and made winding down after a day of exploring all the more enjoyable.

Communal Spaces

The shared bathrooms at BUNK Amsterdam are a well-designed and practical upgrade from standard hostel facilities. With private stalls for both toilets and showers, you can enjoy plenty of privacy and a comfortable experience. The showers are quite spacious and have great water pressure, making them a reliable spot to refresh after a day out in the city.

Additionally, free clean towels are provided with your stay, and if needed, hair dryers are also available to borrow from the front desk. The cleanliness and thoughtful setup of the shared spaces ensure BUNK meets the needs of modern travellers without any issues.

Tech and Hospitality

BUNK keeps up with modern travellers’ needs in every way, ensuring a hassle-free experience from the moment you arrive. Their free WiFi was not only fast and reliable but also capable of handling my streaming usage, video calls back home, and uploading travel photos to my Instagram—perfect for those needing to stay connected.

Additionally, the self-check-in/out option was intuitive and time-saving, making it a breeze for those arriving late or leaving early. I did have the opportunity to check in with the staff at the front desk, and I’m so glad I did. The team was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and eager to help with any questions I had. Their warm hospitality set the tone for my entire stay, making me feel right at home from the very start.

Hotel Dining at Its Best

The on-site restaurant and bar were a delightful surprise! From the delicious food to the tasteful hanging greenery and art pieces, virtually every corner of the restaurant is Instagram-ready. Whether you’re snapping a shot of your morning latte or the ambient Edison bulbs overhead, the décor feels thoughtfully curated to make your dining experience even more memorable.

Bunk Amsterdam - Bar

On my first morning, I enjoyed the Bunked Breakfast, which featured brown bread, a croissant, ham, cheese, a poached egg, jam, butter, chocolate paste, coffee, and a glass of fresh orange juice. The variety was impressive, and everything was fresh and delicious. On my second day, I opted for the pancakes topped with banana, blueberries, chocolate, and whipped cream—a treat that felt like dessert for breakfast!

The servers were incredibly friendly and worked tirelessly to serve the large crowd of hungry patrons in the restaurant.

Unique Design and History

BUNK’s decor is something to behold.

From the gorgeous paintings and unique sculptures (including a T-rex at the front entrance!) to the stunning lighting, the space felt like an artistic wonderland. The Library Studio on the second floor stood out as my favourite spot—a circular room lined with bookshelves and centred around a table where guests could play games or chat amongst friends. It was cozy, inviting, and the perfect place to unwind.

The building’s rich history brings a unique and captivating character to BUNK Amsterdam. Originally constructed in 1921 as the Roman-Catholic St. Rita Church, the space has witnessed many transformations. It endured bombings during World War II, as documented in Anne Frank’s diary, and was later rebuilt with a taller tower and extended hall. Over the years, it transformed from a place of worship into offices for Universal Studios and eventually a municipal library.

Today, BUNK beautifully preserves and celebrates this heritage.

An open-air monument stands as a poignant reminder of the bombing, paying tribute to the resilience of the community. Inside, a reimagined library space bridges the building’s historical roots with its modern role as a vibrant, welcoming hub for travellers and locals alike. This blend of history and contemporary design makes staying at BUNK not just an experience but a journey through time.

Workspaces for Digital Nomads

For travellers needing an efficient workspace, BUNK delivers in spades. The atrium just beyond the front desk is a thoughtfully designed area that caters to digital nomads and remote workers alike. With ample seating options ranging from communal tables to more private nooks, it’s easy to find the perfect spot to suit your working style.

Convenient Day Lockers

BUNK Amsterdam also offers luggage storage service, located on the second floor. If you’ve checked out but still have time to explore Amsterdam before heading to your next destination, this service is a game-changer. For just about €6 per day, you can safely store your belongings in secure lockers, giving you the freedom to roam the city without being weighed down by your luggage. The lockers are spacious enough to accommodate suitcases, backpacks, or shopping bags, and access is straightforward—making it an effortless solution for travellers with later departures.

Things to Do in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a city with endless things to do, and staying at BUNK puts you close to some must-visit spots:

  • A’DAM Tower: Just a 10-minute walk from BUNK, this iconic tower offers breathtaking city views. The highlight is the rooftop swing, “Over the Edge,” where you can swing out over the edge of the building—perfect for thrill-seekers. The tower also has great dining options and a panoramic observation deck.
  • The Anne Frank House: A deeply moving museum offering a glimpse into Anne Frank’s life during World War II. Make sure to book tickets in advance (like 2 to 3 months in advance!), as it’s one of the most popular attractions in Amsterdam.
  • Van Gogh Museum: Home to the largest collection of works by Vincent van Gogh, this museum is a must for art lovers.
  • The Red Light District: Amsterdam’s most famous (and infamous) neighbourhood is a fascinating mix of history, nightlife, and culture. The area features illuminated windows, adult entertainment venues, and unique bars. While it’s a major tourist attraction, be respectful of the workers and the local community. Photography of individuals in the windows is strictly prohibited.
  • The Canals: Take a canal cruise to see Amsterdam’s beauty from the water. There are daytime and nighttime options, with some offering dinner or wine tastings onboard.
  • The Jordaan District: Wander through this charming neighbourhood filled with boutique shops, art galleries, and cozy cafés.
  • Vondelpark: Amsterdam’s largest park is perfect for a leisurely stroll or bike ride, offering a peaceful retreat from the bustling city.

And of course, if you want a truly local experience, rent a bike and explore the city like a true Amsterdammer.

How to Get Around Amsterdam

Navigating Amsterdam is easy and enjoyable:

  • Free Ferry: The best way to get to and from BUNK is via the free ferry from Amsterdam Central Station. It’s quick, convenient, and offers stunning views of the IJ River.
  • Subway: Amsterdam’s subway system is efficient and well-connected, making it simple to get across the city.
  • Trams and Buses: These are great for short trips and allow you to enjoy the city’s sights along the way.
  • Biking: If you’re up for it, rent a bike! It’s the most popular mode of transport here. Just remember to stay alert and respect the city’s cycling rules—bicyclists dominate the streets, and they won’t hesitate to ring their bells if you’re in their way.

Tip: Watch out for bikes! Amsterdam is a cycling city, and bicyclists move quickly. Always check your surroundings before stepping into a bike lane to avoid getting hit.

Final Thoughts

BUNK Amsterdam strikes the perfect balance between affordability and comfort. Whether you’re a backpacker looking for a unique stay, a digital nomad seeking a creative workspace, or a couple on a budget-friendly adventure, the sleeping pods and shared spaces here offer a one-of-a-kind experience. Amsterdam’s charm is undeniable, but staying at BUNK made my trip even more memorable.

Would I stay here again? Absolutely. Until next time, BUNK Amsterdam!

Safe travels,

Carina
