Your Quick-Guide to Vienna’s Spring Easter Markets

Share on:

Forget the winter blues! Vienna is currently waking up in a riot of pastel colours and the scent of fresh Osterpinze (Easter bread). While the city is world-famous for its Christmas magic, the Viennese Easter Markets offer a brighter, breezier, and equally fun experience. From late March through mid-April, many squares transform into hubs of craftsmanship, music, and enough hand-painted eggs to fill a palace.

Here is your go-to guide for navigating the best of the 2026 season!

First Stop: A Fairytale at Schönbrunn

If you’re looking for “romance with a side of history,” this is your spot. Set against the magnificent Baroque backdrop of the Schönbrunn Palace, the Schönbrunn Easter & Spring Market feels like a fairytale.

Easter Markets

The 1,441-room baroque palace towers behind rows of wooden stalls, each one filled with hand-painted eggs, delicate spring decorations, and artisanal crafts. The colours alone are worth the visit, with pastels, florals, and intricate designs that make you want to redecorate your entire home.

Not to mention the smell of freshly baked pastries and warm Austrian treats that fill the air, tempting you at every turn! I happily grabbed a few different yummy desserts (no regrets) and wandered through the market while music played throughout.

And don’t forget to check out the views at the top of the Ferris wheel found on the market grounds!

40,000 Painted Eggs in the Heart of the Old City

The Old Viennese Easter Market is located in the Freyung, one of the most beautiful old squares in Vienna’s city center, which has been used since Roman times! The market offers a wide-display of approximately 40,000 hand-painted easter eggs. Yes, forty thousand! It’s colourful, slightly surreal, and completely mesmerizing to witness.

Stalls are known to sell traditional Easter pastries and treats, alongside handmade crafts and floral arrangements. Additionally, the musical programs and family-friendly puppet shows at the Easter market often draw huge crowds!

And don’t forget to get a photo with the infamous “Giant Egg” in the center of the market!

A Laid-Back Stroll at Am Hof

Just a short stroll from Freyung, the Am Hof Market focuses heavily on local customs and high-quality art. You can find many beautifully carved wooden and hand-painted eggs, spring flowers, and other handcrafted goods! I spent my time slowly wandering, picking up small treats, and just enjoying being in the city center.

✨ If You Go

  • Late March is often peak season for the markets.
  • Go earlier in the day for fewer crowds!
  • Come hungry. You will want to try everything!

After my trip to Vienna, I couldn’t help but feel like I’d experienced a quieter, more intimate side of the city. The Easter markets were the perfect way to slow down, to taste, and to take it all in at my own pace, one beautifully decorated stall at a time.

Safe travels,

Carina
